Judge Aurora Navarette-Reciña the former Chairman of the Commission of Human Rights and now the President of United Nations Association of the Philippines (UNAP) and Undersecretary Leon Flores III the newly appointed Chairman of the National Youth Commission (NYC) signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the two institutions regarding the 12th International Youth Day Celebration last Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at the NYC Office in Bookman Building, Quezon Ave.

With the theme, “Volunteering for MDGs: Discover the Volunteer in You,” 12th IYD aims to mobilize one thousand (1000) youth leaders in the Asia Pacific Region on current issues and concerns and to promote volunteerism among young people especially in the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals by 2015 at the Sarabia Manor Hotel and Convention Center, Iloilo City on August 3 to 7, 2011. This is in support of United Nations General Assembly Resolution # 64/134 Proclamation of August 2010-August 2011 as International Year of the Youth (IYY), Executive Order No. 229 Declaring Every August 12 of every year as the Philippine International Youth Day and Presidential Proclamation 92 declaring the year 2011 as 10th Anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers (IYV +10) in the Philippines, in line with the global theme, “Volunteering for MDGs.”

Aside from local experts who will engage the participants for an open exchange of diverse perspectives on contemporary global challenges especially the attainment of the MDGs, international speakers were invited. Provincial Government of Guimaras

Guimaras (Filipino: Himaras) is an island province of the Philippines located in the Western Visayas region. Among the smallest provinces, its capital is Jordan. The island is located in the Panay Gulf, between the islands of Panay and Negros. To the northwest is the province of Iloilo and to the southeast is Negros Occidental.

Located southwest of Panay, Guimaras is separated physically from Iloilo by a narrow channel, which takes about fifteen minutes to cross by pumpboat from the Ortiz landing on Iloilo to Jordan.

Background and Rationale of International Youth Day Celebration

Much has to be done in order for the

Philippines

to meet the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) set by the United Nations. According to the latest Philippine MDG Progress Report published by NEDA and UNDP, the Philippines is not on track in meeting three of the eight goals—the ones on maternal health, on combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases and on achieving universal primary education. The other millennium development goals are eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, promoting gender equality and empowering women, reducing child mortality, ensuring environmental sustainability and developing a global partnership for development.

The United Nations Association of the Philippines (UNAP) believes that the youth sector can help the country in attaining its millennium goals provided that they are given the proper information. Since 1999, UNAP has organized various projects and programs for the youth sector of the

Philippines

because of the need to engage them in community development and nation-building. The 1st International Youth Day Celebration and Conference was conducted in Manila, Philippines last March 20-23, 1999. It was a fitting tribute to youth volunteers in the preparation for the UN International Year of Peace. With the theme “The Role of Youth Volunteers in the Promotion of the Culture of Peace and Sustainable Development”, eighty (80) youth leaders from Japan, the Philippines, Brazil, Cambodia, East Timor, Korea, Indonesia, Israel, Thailand, Germany, Myanmar and Vietnam drafted action plans for the regional and national celebration of the International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World (IDPNCW). Furthermore, regional chapters of United Nations Youth Association and UNESCO Clubs were established.

UNAP has organized and continued to initiate programs promoting the culture of peace, tolerance and respect for human rights directly targeting the youth sector as beneficiaries especially when the UN Millennium Development Goals was signed by the

in the year 2000. Recognized as a unique group in society due to the many aspects of vulnerability they faced while passing through major stages in their lives, the youth are considered as a potent force, a human resource and capital with enormous potentials for contributing to the evolving culture of peace. Since 1999, UNAP has forged strong linkages with various national and international organizations in implementing the various programs such as Youth Empowerment Summit for Peace-building (YES-PEACE), Ecological Camp, PEACE CAMP and Asia Pacific Youth Leaders Encounters. These organizations include Teachers College of Columbia (National Peace Education Conference –1999), UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines (YES-PEACE, ECO-CAMP & PEACE CAMP 1998-2003), UNESCO Principal Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific-Bangkok (1st Asia Pacific Youth Leaders Encounter-2001), UNESCO Headquarters-Paris (Participation Program-Establishment of UN Youth Network in the Philippines-2001) and Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEM Youth Network on Sustainable Development).

True to its vision of educating future leaders towards personal renewal and social transformation, these collaborations have strengthened the UNAP’s role not only in teacher training but also in training youth leaders on global issues of peace, human rights, sustainable development, and global citizenship. Recently, UNAP engaged with United Nations Volunteers Program to conduct the Youth Empowerment Series for the Millennium Development Goals (YES 4 MDGS!). This project takes special focus on the role of youth volunteers in HIV Care and Prevention. According to the Second Philippines Progress Report on the Millennium Development Goals, “The cumulative number of HIV/Ab seropositive cases increased from 1,451 in 2000 to 2,200 in 2004; despite the increase, the prevalence rate remains below one percent.” However According to the report, however, the presence of preconditions for full-blown epidemic was noted, the Philippine National AIDS Council (PNAC) describes the epidemic to be “hidden and growing”. It is in this context that this project was organized to provide one hundred fifty (150) young leaders in Ilocos Sur, Negros Occidental and Mindoro Oriental a proactive action in combating AIDS in the

Philippines

though volunteerism and collective stance.

The above-mentioned projects and activities of UNAP produced tangible results, Her Excellency President Macapagal Arroyo signed Executive Order No. 229 Declaring Every August 12 of every year as the Philippine International Youth Day in August 12, 2002. UNAP Board member Mr. Roderick Cruz work tirelessly to pass this executive order that will mainstream the MDG achievement in every International Youth Day celebration. For nine years now since 1999, UNAP has awarded 45 youth leaders with Her Excellency PGMA in Malacanang. These youth leaders are already engaged in various government offices, elected as local executive in the different provinces and gaining executive positions in international diplomatic community and NGOs.

12^th IYD celebration aims to mobilize youth leaders from the student councils, the City/Municipal/Provincial/National SK Federation by providing them a venue to enhance their skills in project planning, management, monitoring and implementation using the eight (8) Millennium Development Goals. The SK is in itself the largest youth organization in the country. While it is supported by the government, it is not a governmental agency in the real sense of the word. It has more of a civilian or private character and as such may operate with all the qualities of an NGO. SK Federation President in the City/Municipal/Provincial sits as a regular councilor or board members in the City/Municipal/Province. They can legislate local ordinances and provincial resolutions to allocate funds for the youth.

OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the 12th IYD celebration, the participants must have organized themselves and shared their personal plans in championing the attainment of United Nations Millennium Development Goals through volunteerism and affirmative actions.

During the 12th IYD conference, the participants must have –

· artistically presented their common understanding on the role of the youth in building a culture of volunteerism as well as the link between peace, human rights, the MDGs and sustainable development;

· established their networks and functional partnerships between youth and various institutions (government and non-government organizations, business, media, academe);

· taken an oath of commitment to attain the UNYAP/Youth Vision Statement as well as their Youth Declaration for MDG Attainment through Volunteerism

· enjoyed learning from the practices on the ground along MDGs through activities such as a recognition of Outstanding Youth Leaders, community immersions, academic contest and cultural exchanges; and,

FOOD, ACCOMMODATION AND ATTIRE

Participants shall be provided with meal stubs for the five-day conference (7 snacks, 4 breakfast, 4 Dinner and 4 Lunch). If meal tickets are lost, the participants will be required to purchase new tickets. For special provisions on food, please inform the secretariat. All participants will be billeted at the Sarabia Manor Hotel and Convention Center (4 participants in a room). If in case you prefer to stay alone in one room, you can pay directly to the hotel cashier and your registration fee shall be reduced by 1,500.00Php. Check in shall be on August 3, 2011 at 12:00 noon and checkout shall be on August 7, 2011 at 12:00 noon. Arriving early or extending beyond this date is at the expense of the participants.

Formal clothing is recommended for Plenary Sessions and Special Events. National dress should be worn during the International Cultural Night on August 4, 2011. Some sporting attire (e.g. jogging pants) is also required for the International Ecological Tour in Guimaras Island on August 6, 2011. The weather is expected to be warm, sunny, humid and rainy throughout the period of the 12^th IYD celebration in Iloilo City and Guimaras Island.

TRANSPORTATION

The Secretariat will arrange the accommodation and food of all official delegates including transportation for the trip to Guimaras Island. There will be no transportation available to fetch the official delegates at the airport. All participants must arrange their arrival in Iloilo City on August 3, 2011 and departure on August 7, 2011.

Iloilo International Airport (Iloilo Airport) is the airport serving the general area of Iloilo City. It is located at 19 kilometers (12 mi) northwest of Iloilo City on a 188-hectare (460-acre) site in across the towns of Cabatuan, Santa Barbara and San Miguel. It opened to commercial traffic on June 14, 2007 after a decade of planning and construction, replacing Mandurriao Airport in Iloilo City which had been in service for over seventy years. The new airport inherited its IATA and ICAO airport codes, as well as its position as the fourth-busiest airport in the

Philippines

, from its predecessor. It is linked to the city through Tomas Confessor Highway and served by metered taxis, airport shuttle vans and multicabs. The new port of iloilo is strategically located in the Southern coast of Panay Island, in the Panay Gulf, it has one of the country’s safest and most natural harbors. Guimaras Island guards the port from violent storms and makes it ideal for harboring ships and vessels.

· The Iloilo Domestic Port (formerly the Old Foreign Pier) The Iloilo Domestic Port or popularly known as "Fort/Port San Pedro", serves inter-island passenger and cargo ferries which serves the routes Manila, Bacolod, Cebu, Zamboanga and Cagayan de Oro. It is located near Fort San Pedro and the mouth of Iloilo River at the City Proper district. It is also the port of call for several domestic shipping companies such as SuperFerry, Negros Navigation, Sulpicio Lines, Cokaliong Shipping, Trans-Asian Shipping and others. The colloquial name "Port San Pedro" refers to the old Spanish fort besides it that was destroyed during World War II.

· Muelle Loney/Iloilo River Wharf It is the original port of the city. Opened to international trade in 1855, it has served as the trans-shipment docks for muscovado sugar in the late 19th to the first half of the 20th century. It has undergone several times of expansion and improvement. Today, it serves smaller cargo ships, roll-on roll-off ferries bound for Guimaras and Negros Island and fast ferries that ply Iloilo-Bacolod route regularly.

· Iloilo-Guimaras Jetty (Banca) Ports Jetty ports for Guimaras outrigger ferries are located at Calle Ortiz and Parola. The terminal at Calle Ortiz serve Jordan, Guimaras-bound passenger and cargo outrigger boats, while Parola terminal serve Buenavista, Guimaras-bound ferries. On the other hand, the City Government of Iloilo plans to construct a modern ferry terminal serving Iloilo and Guimaras through public-private partnership.

Call for Papers: Youth and Educator's Summit for the Millennium Development Goals (YES4MDGs!)

Youth leaders, academics and researchers are invited to join the 12th International Youth Day (12IYD) Celebration and Youth and Educators Summit for the Millennium Development Goals (YES4MDGs!) which is scheduled on August 3-7, 2011 at the Sarabia Manor Hotel and Convention Center, Iloilo City, Philippines. The 12th IYD celebration is spearheaded by the United Nations Association of the Philippines and United Nations Youth Associations of the Philippines with endorsement from Commission on Higher Education (CHED), Department of Education (DepEd), National Youth Commission (NYC), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), and the UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines. It will be filled with informative presentations, the latest in educational research, exciting displays at the IYD Marketplace and Expo and lots of networking opportunities for members and guests to reconnect with educators, researchers, youth leaders and industry colleagues.

Submission Guidelines

All submission for the 12th IYD and YES 4 MDG are required to be submitted electronically. A paper may only be submitted once, with no retractions or modifications once submitted. Once submitted, the order and names of authors listed on the original submission may not be altered including indication of the lead author’s name.

The 12th IYD and YES 4 MDG will be composed of several types of contributions:

• Full Papers (for academics) – these include mainly accomplished research results and have 8 pages at the maximum (5000 words).

• Short Papers (for academics and youth leaders) – These include fresh concepts, preliminary research results but may also contain work-in progress reports. These have 4 pages at maximum (2500 words).

• Reflection Papers (for academics, youth leaders, media practitioners and Government, NGO, International Organization heads)– These might review recent research literature pertaining to a particular problem or approach, indicate what the findings suggest, and/or provide a suggestion - with rationale and justification - for a different approach or perspective on that problem. Reflection papers might also analyze best practices in youth led projects for MDGs with specific focus on volunteerism. These have two pages at maximum (1500 words).

The Secretariat will correspond with the Lead (primary) author only. Co-presenters should not contact the 12th IYD. It is the primary author's responsibility to notify all co-presenters regarding the status of the proposal as well as to notify the 12th IYD of any change in the Lead Author’s contact information. The secretariat will use the contact information provided on the original submission and it is the Lead Author's responsibility to notify the 10th IYD of any change in contact information.

All presenters are required to register for the full conference registration. All travel and additional expenses, including the conference registration fee, are the responsibility of the presenter(s). Limited subsidies for registration fee are available upon request in writing to the 12th IYD Conference Director.

Paper Review Process

Submissions are judged on their overall quality (design of the study, development of the concept, etc.), their significance and contribution to the discipline, and their interest to conference delegates. All submitted manuscripts must be original (i.e. not been published elsewhere), follow academic writing, structure and methodology. Papers judged to have outstanding merit by the Conference Paper Review Committees will receive a Best Paper designation in the conference program and will be recognized at a general session for all attendees.

Manuscripts are submitted to the Chair of the Paper Committee, Prof. Serafin A. Arviola Jr., at sarviola2002@gmail.com. This is the only acceptable format available for the submission of paper manuscripts. Once accepted paper presenters are REQUIRED to submit the Final draft, abstract (150 words), picture of the author and short biography (100 words)

We always say that the young people are the hope of this country. The idea receives both local and international recognition. In fact, our Constitution recognizes the vital role of the youth in nation-building, promotes and protects their physical, moral, spiritual, intellectual, and social well-being. Specifically, it stressed that our Government shall inculcate in the youth patriotism and nationalism, and encourage their involvement in public and civic affairs. This is precisely why we have SK (Sangguning Kabataan), to introduce to the young people to government service in local, provincial, and national levels.

Now it seems that our youth had gone astray. Massive calls for SK abolition flocks both in Congress and the Senate. Reasons for these calls, among others are due to SK’s failure to meet the demands expected from them. Proponents claimed that SK is becoming more dangerous than useful. To emphasize, SK has been breeding grounds for corruption. Our young leaders are mostly non-performing, or had contributed but piecemeal to our community. Their contributions if at all, do not commensurate to the heavy budget allocated to them by our national government. So it must be abolished?

The UNYAP do not withstand all observations of these proponents for abolition but we disagree in strongest terms that it is the proper way to address this issue. If the solution to a corrupt system is indeed to abolish it, then all the agencies and public offices of this country had long been gone. Instead, let us give concrete solutions to this predicament by identifying problems and giving concrete solutions. If it is claimed that SK is a breeding ground for corruption, it means that corruption is not inherent among them, rather are mere influence by a more corrupt system. Then let us move to clean this dust that triggers corruption. Who are corrupting them anyway? The old politicians who surprisingly are the same people moving for its abolition. If indeed SK officials are under performing their duties, then the problem lies in the implementation of its rules and regulations. Teach them. The solution therefore is a reform on our laws, a more effective mechanism that will fit in the demands of times. Reforms that are embodied in the SK reform bills by our youth advocate legislators.

Verily, despite the many challenges, the SK, an embodiment youth participation, is an institution worth continuously developing. Active participation in nation building is a right, rather than a mere privilege vested upon them by our most Supreme Constitution. It cannot lie on the mercy of selfish and sweeping generalizations. In legal contemplation, such a bold move is even unconstitutional. Abolishing the SK will defeat the very right of our youth guaranteed not just by our Constitution, but by the International Human Rights Law as well. The foundation of every state is the education of its youth, and education can only be achieved when it goes out beyond theories. Our youth needs support and understanding, rather than condemnation. For a child is spanked by his parents when he commits a mistake, and is never killed.

In celebration of the International Year of the Youth (IYY), the United Nations Youth Association of the Philippines in partnership with the Philippine Normal University, United Nations Information Centre (UNIC), and United Nations Association of the Philippines (UNAP) hosted the World Speaking Tour of Ms. Monique Coleman, UN Youth Champion for the International Year of the Youth (IYY) last February 26, 2011 at the Philippine Normal University Gymnasium, Manila, Philippines.

She was joined by PNU President Dr. Ester B. Ogena, UNAP President Judge Aurora Navarette Recina, UNYAP President Mr. Marlon Jhef P. Pineda and Mr. Leon G. Flores, In-coming Chairperson, National Youth Commission. She also interacted with youth leaders on relevant issues affecting the Filipino youth. These include youth in nation-building, pre-marital sex, child labor, youth employment, smoking, alcoholism, drug addiction and youth political participation.

UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines (NatCom) accredited 5 UNYAP Chapters as UNESCO Clubs in a ceremony held last December 15, 2010 at the Summit Lounge, Department of Foreign Affairs. UNESCO Clubs are groups of people of all ages, from all walks of life, who share the UNESCO ideal, seek to disseminate it and associate themselves with the work of the international Organization by undertaking activities directly inspired by those of UNESCO. Although the Clubs may assume many different forms, they all have something in common: a firm belief in UNESCO’s ideals as set forth in its Constitution and a commitment to the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

There were five (5) UNYAP Clubs accredited by NatCom out of nine (9) organizations. These include UNYAP DLSU Dasma, PESCAYDO of Aurora, CARAGA Youth Leaders Network of Butuan, Philippine Normal University-UNESCO Club and University of Northern Philippines in Vigan.

Mr. Sherwin Taay, UNYAP President of Central Luzon based in Baler, Aurora was selected as President of the newly form organization - Philippine Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Centers and Association (PFUCCA). Other elected UNYAP Officers were Ms. Laila Monera as PFUCCA VP-Internal and Ms. Grace Ganotice as Secretary General.

UNYAP CARAGA celebrates IYV + 10 through a Feeding Program, December 5, 2010 Butuan City

The Caraga Youth Leaders Network, Inc. (CYLN) and United Nations Youth Association of the Philippines - Caraga (UNYAP) in cooperation with the Timbercity Child Survival Program of the Four Square Gospel Church in the Philippines - Butuan City, Youth On Unity Organization, United Clans of Caraga, Gawad Kalingan Youth Movement - Pagatpatan, Children of Mary, Biology Students Society and Muslim Youth Group conducted the 2010 Children Feeding Exposure at Slaughter Area, Brgy. Obrero, Butuan City on December 5, 2010.

The feeding started at 1: 00 PM by visiting the houses and weighting the children. A short prayer and a story telling were conducted. Then, a short discussion on MDGs of the UN also took place and a mass feeding. Finally, a short games and prayer made the feeding exposure end.

The activity is designed to feed up our children ages 5 to 8 to eradicate malnutrition and hunger in consonance to the Goal # 1 of the Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations, and in celebration to the 2010 International Volunteers’ Day to achieve the MDGs by 2015. A seed money amounting to $100.00 provided by United Nations Volunteers through Philippine National Volunteers Service Coordinating Agency (PNVSCA) was provided to start up the project.

The feeding exposure attended by more or less 200 children and parents all over the brgy. It is also participated by more or less 50 youths of the Caraga Youth Leaders Network.

The asst. regional coordinator of UNYAP in person of Mr. Cris Barry Burdeos together the program coordinator of the CYLN in person of Ms. Roweana Mae Deliso commended the efforts and cooperation of the parents and the brgy. Ms. Mr.Roberto M. Sabandal II, the UNYAP city coordinator helped the management of inviting other youths of Caraga Region. The brgy. officials of the beneficiary brgy. expressed their heartfelt thanks for the commendable efforts in helping them to eradicate hunger and malnutrition in their brgy.

Greetings!

We cordially invite you to join the activities to celebrate the National Volunteer Month (NVM) and the International Volunteer Day (IVD) 2010.

This year, the Philippine National Volunteer Service Coordinating Agency (PNVSCA) in partnership with the United Nations Youth Associations of the Philippines (UNYAP), Hands On Manila (HOM) and the United Nations Volunteers (UNV), will conduct a “Volunteer Fair and Youth Forum” on December 3, 2010 at the University of Makati as the major activity for the celebration of the National Volunteer Month (NVM) and International Volunteer Day (IVD). This will also serve as one of the launching activities for the International Year of the Volunteer + 10 (IYV+10) to be celebrated in 2011.

The Volunteer Fair and Youth Forum aims to provide a venue for around 500 youth leaders and volunteer to come together; share and process their experiences in volunteerism; identify their strengths and weaknesses; and enhance leadership skills, techniques and strategies in the pursuit of the UN Millennium Development Goals. In particular, it aims 1) to showcase best volunteer practices supportive of the MDGs by guest volunteer organizations and individuals; 2) to provide avenue for volunteer youth organizations to promote and encourage volunteerism through program advocacy and information drive through conduct of a Volunteer Fair that will showcase and exhibits their various programs and activities; and 3) to draft collective recommendation for cooperation, networking and collaboration in the attainment of the MDG in the Philippines.

In this connection may we invite your organization to join the said event by sending youth volunteers to participate in the forum, set-up a fair booth and a resource person to share your organizations volunteering efforts. Your participation will go long way towards the promotion of youth volunteering.

In 1997, the UN General Assembly, convinced that the need for volunteer effort was greater than ever and that a year designed to enhance the recognition, facilitation, networking and promotion of volunteer service could make a significant contribution to generating increased awareness of the achievements and further potential of volunteerism, proclaimed 2001 as the International Year of Volunteers - or 'IYV'.

To consolidate successes attained and build on the momentum created by the International Year of Volunteers, the General Assembly called for the marking of IYV+10 in 2011.

Dear UN advocates,

The UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines (UNACOM) wishes you and your institution our greetings of peace.

We are on the process of developing a strong network of individuals and institutions like schools, NGOs and youth-led organization that are working towards the attainment of the ideals and misson of UNESCO through the UNESCO Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet) and UNESCO CLUB.

ASPnet is a global network of more than 8,500 educational institutions in 180 countries. Member institutions ranging from pre-schools, primary, secondary and vocational schools to teacher training institutions work in support of international understanding, peace, intercultural dialogue, sustainable development and quality education in practice.

Although UNESCO Clubs may vary a great deal on account of their location and nature of their activities, they all have the same purpose:

At the national level, UNESCO Clubs encourage the civic awareness of people to bind them to their historical community and to specific cultural values of which they are the guardians. UNESCO Clubs also bring home to them the need to preserve those values and make their importance, dignity and unique originality clear to all.

ILOILO CITY PHILIPPINES: STAND UP TAKE ACTION 2010

“United in Achieving the United Nations Millennium Development Goals by 2010”

“If you’re demanding for your rights, be sure to do your obligations,” a clear statement that shows that our country SHOULD NOT BE PASSIVE. It should have a cyclic mechanism. As I explained, we should not just wait for the government to deliver its services to the people. We should also do our share. As it is always emphasized, WE HAVE A ROLE and RESPONSIBILITY IN NATION BUILDING. It is not just the government that will solely and independently take actions for everything.

Last September 18, 2010, Iloilo City participated the international advocacy of Standing Up and Taking Action against Inequality and for the achievement of the UN Millennium Development Goals. A three (3) day Exhibit, started on September 15th, about the MDGs was presented at Robinson’s Mall, Iloilo to inform the public of what are these MDGs and how the Iloilo Government supports and fulfills it. This was made possible with different agencies and departments of the city.

The highlight of ILOILO CITY: SUTA 2010 was started by a parade at 6:00am from Jaro Plaza with almost 350 Student Leaders, NGOs, and Youths to Iloilo Provincial Capitol. A short program was then instituted with Iloilo City Councilor Jason Gonzales as the Keynote Speaker. Simultaneously, NSTP classes in three(3) Universities included a part for the MDGs and SUTA. They were all gathered, explained the significance and their roles in achieving the MDGs and delivered their pledges and commitment of support.

Right after the parade, a group of 150 students went directly to Gawad Kalinga Jaro (Cacho and Gonzales sites) for the SUTA’s immersion activity. They were already grouped into categories designed to cater specific MDG and age sector. We had activities like (1) Heroes Build, (2) Community Development, (3) SK Education, (4) Reproductive Health Forum, (5) Self Awareness and Teambuilding for Youth, (6) Reading, Storytelling, and Health Education for Kids, and (7) Health Nutrition for Parents. These activities were participated by students from Central Philippine University, University of the Philippines in the Visayas and the West Visayas State University. We also had a feeding activity at 4:00 in the afternoon for the whole community as well.

We had collected 6117 signatures of support for the MDGs in the province. Right after the SUTA, the organizers planned to draft a proposal for our local legislators to prioritizes and include the MDGs in their policies. Same goes with our Congressmen that their P70m “Pork Barrel” be spent on MDGs/pro MDGs projects.

The activity was organized by the United Nations Youth Association of the Philippines (UNYAP) in cooperation with the Student Council Alliance of the Philippines (SCAP) and Gawad Kalinga Isang Milyong Bayani Volunteer Group (GK1MB).

Celebrate 2010 Peace Day: A Big Success

The International Day of Peace, observed each year on 21 September, is a global call for ceasefire and non-violence. This year the Secretary-General is calling on governments and citizens to focus on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. In the Philippines, a multi-sectoral, multi-faith and intergenerational gathering was held in the Quezon City Circle spearheaded by Generation Peace Network with support from United Nations Development program and Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process. UNYAP being a member of GenPeace Network joined the activity by mounting an MDG Booth and reading poetry for peace. Judge Aurora Navarrette Recina, UNAP President and Prof. Serafin A. Arviola Jr., UNAP Director for Youth Affairs graced the occasion. Our participation in this activity is being coordinated by Ms. Macky Mendoza, VP Internal and Mr. Alexander Santos, Commissioner for Peace and Human Rights Education.

On 13 June 2009, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon launched a multiplatform campaign under the slogan WMD – We Must Disarm to mark the 100-day countdown which lead to the International Day of Peace on 21 September.

The United Nations will continue to raise awareness of the dangers and costs of nuclear weapons, and on why nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation are so crucial. The Secretary-General was joined in the campaign by United Nations Messenger of Peace Michael Douglas, who has championed the cause of disarmament for the United Nations since 1998, and American actor Rainn Wilson, featured in the TV series The Office.

The International Day of Peace was established by the UN General Assembly in 1981 for “commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace within and among all nations and people.” Twenty years later, the General Assembly decided that 21 September would be observed annually as a “day of global ceasefire and non-violence" and invited all Member States, organizations and individuals to commemorate the day, including through education and public awareness, and to cooperate with the United Nations in the establishment of a global ceasefire.
